WASTEWISE project | Turning food waste metrics into decisions
There is increasing pressure to reduce food waste as part of efforts to improve the performance of the food system in Europe and around the world. While measuring food waste is an important first step, the WASTEWISE project shows that looking at kilograms alone is not enough. A more complete understanding is needed, one that links food waste to its environmental impacts, nutritional losses, and potential rebound effects, such as unintended behavioural responses or wider effects across the food system when waste is reduced. This broader approach provides a stronger basis for identifying inefficiencies, comparing practices across countries and sectors, and supporting more effective and coherent decision-making across the food system
